Drawn Poorly Zine
In 2017, I founded and began producing Drawn Poorly. A collaborative zine project exploring chronic illness, disability and mental health through creative contributions from people worldwide.
After being diagnosed with a chronic illness at 23, the project was born out of a wish for ill and disabled people to be more connected. It has also become a space for telling our stories in our own words instead of how others want to tell them.
Zines by their nature are DIY and blank canvasses. They have been used frequently by marginalised folx for sharing, story telling and activism.
Drawn Poorly has been featured on the BBC, in The Skinny, Edinburgh Fringe’s core programme and on Poor Lass Podcast.
Collaborative Zines
Since the project’s beginning, there have been nine collaborative zines which have featured creatives from all over the world. Subjects have included: Identity, Diagnosis, Relationships, Nature, FOMO (Fear of Missing Out), Space, Emotions, Care and Barriers.
A number of the collaborative zines are out of print. However, I hope to offer digital copies sometime in the future.
I have also worked with people on commission, creating zines about their projects. If you’d like to find out more about that, have a look here:
Mini Zines
More recently, I have been releasing a number of mini zines on social media. This series is aesthetically very zine traditional and explore a range of themes pertaining to illness and disability experience.
I also deliver workshops on mini zine making. This can be customised to particularly themes, ages and lengths. Get in touch if you’d like to discuss this
Other!
In addition to producing zines and delivering workshops; there have also been other opportunities. Including: A performance night and zine launch, an exhibition with Short Supply and Contact, a Meet the Maker talk at the Wellcome Collection.
